Two new Straight Talk phones have been released recently and both of them have a lot to offer. One of them is the Samsung Galaxy Proclaim, the first Straight Talk phone to operate on Verizon (CDMA) networks. This phone will work in many different locales. You gotta love Verizon’s network. The second phone is the LG Optimus Black Android phone. This particular phone is the best one Straight Talk has in its arsenal right now. Operating on the Unlimited Straight Talk plan, this phone is a winner.

The Straight Talk LG 900G is one of the more affordable Straight Talk prepaid phones at a price of only $69. The LG 900 works with both of Straight Talk’s plans (but be honest, you only want the unlimited plan, otherwise why get ST?). There are surely some other phones that stick out a little bit more from this label like the Android Samsung Precedent (which only works with the unlimited plan). The Nokia E5 and 6790 are two other smart phone options. The LG 900 is a decent phone and good at this price.

Update: I just heard that Straight Talk will be releasing a second Android phone, the LG Optimus Q, which will run on the unlimited plan like the Precedent. So if you like the LG Optimus line of phones, now you have another prepaid option.

Sprint Prepaid Plans vs Straight Talk Prepaid Plans

This article is a comparison of Sprint prepaid plans to Straight Talk prepaid plans. You will notice that these plans are very different from one another and each has its own pros and cons.

Sprint and Straight Talk have two of the most attractive prepaid plans out there today. The prepaid industry has been rising rapidly in the last few years thanks to a continuous clash between prepaid providers that has resulted in them offering better, more affordable and more competitive prepaid plans as well as prepaid phones. Prepaid phones have became a very important factor in users lives, so better offer of prepaid phones have resulted, and companies have made bold moves from postpaid to prepaid since there’s more business to be had (and more money to be saved for customers). Two of the biggest cell phone providers, Sprint Prepaid and Straight Talk Prepaid, have a lot to offer . Let’s compare and contrast the two companies.

Sprint’s and Straight Talk’s plans are some the best on the market so far, in terms of what they offer and for how much. However, the affordability would not matter much if they would not have great coverage that users can rely on. Sprint‘s coverage is most prominent in major cites and along interstate highways but in rural areas Sprint subscribers are limited to analog roaming coverage. On the other side, Straight Talk has been available over Verizon’s CDMA network and on AT&T for its GSM-type. Verizon’s extensive network is the most prominent, encompassing cities, rural areas and more international destinations (allows roaming in 40 countries).
As far as prepaid plans are concerned, both of these prepaid providers have interesting and very affordable plans to offer. Sprint did not have its own prepaid offer until very recently. The new Sprint Common Cents prepaid mobile service (that was sold in WalMart stores) appeared to have a very simple and unique prepaid plan where minutes not entirely used rounded down.

Sprint Owns Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, and Common Cents

Beside that, Sprint offers attractive and affordable prepaid plans through its Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile brands. Common Cents offers a plan where you pay 7 cents minute and text messages, $20 per month for unlimited messaging, data for $1 per megabyte a day, and rounding the minutes down instead of up (talk time of 1 min 46 sec you will pay as 1 min). It’s most popular prepaid provider by far is Boost Mobile.

Through Boost Mobile, Sprint offers a $50 plan with unlimited nationwide talk, text, web, 411, IM, and email. To make this plan even more affordable and competitive there is something called the Shrinkage plan that lowers your month by $5 after every 6 on-time payments, until you reach $35 a month. You even have the unlimited plan for BlackBerry for $60, which also can be shrunken to $45, something that Straight Talk does not have at all and what could be important to some people (a BlackBerry).

And a plan Beyond Talk from Virgin Mobile, designed specially for the youth part as they spend the most time texting and using data and Web. For $25 a month users get unlimited messaging, email, data and Web with 300 minutes of talk time, for $40 a month 1,200 minutes, for $60 unlimited talk time and BlackBerry plan for an additional $10 per month.

Which Prepaid Plan is Best for You?

As usual, it depends on what you need and want. Straight Talk offers two prepaid plans. One is All You Need Plan for $30 and offers 1000 minutes, 1000 messages and 30 MB of data usage. The other plan, Unlimited Plan is offering to the users everything unlimited: minutes, messages and mobile web access. This plan is very competitive and many people find it very useful in combination with great coverage and pretty good handsets offer.

Common Cents sounds like a good plan but bear in mind that it comes with limited handsets: LG 101 at $19.77, the Samsung M340 at $39.77, and Kyocera S2300 at $69.77, which can be a problem for some potential users. On the other hand, for people who do not use the phone for much talking, the plan from Virgin Mobile for $25 a month can be a good choice. Boost Mobile would be a better choice than Straight Talk only after some time after using Shrinkage plan but until then, Straight Talk’s $45 unlimited plan for unlimited everything seems the best choice so far (together with great coverage).

Can You Save $800 with Straight Talk Prepaid Phones?

Straight Talk Wireless makes a very bold claim on its website. The company claims that if you use Straight Talk phones, you can save $850 off of your cell phone bill over the course of the year.

Wouldn’t that be ridiculously awesome if you could save that much? I think I would buy myself a new bike or surf board or take a trip somewhere if I knew I was going to have an extra 800 bucks lying around.

It obviously depends on your current cell phone costs how much you would save using a Straight Talk phone, but it is true that both of the prepaid plans the company offers look very attractive.

For $30 a month you get 1,000 minutes and 1,000 texts.

For $45 a month, you get unlimited talk, text–AND web!!! Unlimited web browsing is what throws this plan over the edge for me, but not everyone needs to browse the web form their phone.

I like a few of Straight Talk’s phones as well, including Samsung Finesse and Samsung r355c. I also hold the RAZR in a special place in my heart–not sure why, I guess I just like the phone. There are some other pretty sweet looking phones and deals at the site. One of them is the current deal for the Nokia E71 smartphone for only $49 for a refurbished model of the phone. Pretty good phone at a very good price, even though it’s been used before.

Picking the best prepaid company is sort of like picking out the best car. Everyone has their own opinions and it’s true that many wireless companies provide better service in different parts of the country. Straight Talk is a newer plan from TracFone, but you can see in the diagram below that its prices are very low and its services are very attractive. By the way, it’s a prepaid company.

While some may think Straight Talk is the best prepaid company, you may find quite a few who think Boost Mobile or MetroPCS has the best plans in the biz. It really depends on personal experience.

Everyone has had a terrible customer service experience and came out hating the company that provided the customer service. Opinions on companies can be shaped very quickly.

Some people I talk to say that Straight Talk is the best wireless providers they’ve been with, while others have complained about customer service from the company.

But then again, I’ve never found a wireless provider that is complaint free. One thing I know about the cellular services business is that everyone complains about customer service.

Straight Talk Wireless is available in Wal-Mart locations and online. Buying online is the best option because I have heard that Wal-Mart does not always have the phone models people want to buy. If you buy a Straight Talk phone online, you will most likely get the handset you want.

E5 (nice phone), Nokia E71 (fan favorite), and Nokia 6790 (a younger leaning phone). All are good phones, but it’s interesting that the Android phone, the Samsung Precedent, is the least expensive one out of the four phones.

The Samsung r451c was added to the Straight Talk wireless prepaid lineup a few months ago and has proven to be a good option for people looking for a solid (if very basic) cell phone to use with a prepaid phone plan.

Samsung r451c will get done what you need it to get done–all while helping you save money with your Straight Talk prepaid plan. Straight Talk has two plans.

The $45 plan gives you unlimited talk time, text messages, web browsing, and a strong network (Verizon!).

The $30 plan gives you 1,000 minutes of talk time, 1,000 text messages, and 30 mb of web browsing. Let’s be honest, this plan gives you quite a bit, so unless you are a heavy talker, you will probably not need to spring for the unlimited plan.

But if you find that you need more talk time and want to browse more than 350 pages on the Internet (which is approximately what 30 mb of data will give you), then pay the extra $15 for the unlimited plan, which is still one of the best deals in the wireless market.

$45 for unlimited phone use is an absolute steal. $30 is an amazing deal as well for what you get. You almost can’t go wrong.
