Apple May Lower Some Television Downloads to $1

In a bit of news from Apple-land, there is apparently some discussion about lowering some TV show downloads to a buck in order to entice more people to use iTunes to buy television episodes and to compete with the other cheap ways people have of watching television content–namely, Redbox and torrent downloads.

If it gets a green light, you can expect this price-slashing in April.

In other related news, it’s been reported that Hulu may be developing a non-flash player specifically to gain an iPad audience.

Engadget to Deliver Apple-Free Tech News for Mac-Haters

In a cool move that will make at least 16 Mac-haters (or at least people who don’t feel the need to read a post detailing every business ripple and rumor evoked by the Cupertino-based company) happy, tech blog Engadget has decided to offer a blog feed of its content sans any Apple-related news.

Talk about catering to a niche–a huge niche! I tend to like reading Apple news, but I definitely see the other side of the coin.

Verizon and AT&T Wireless in Price War

Verizon Wireless and AT&T are heating up a price war that takes things even further than the iPhone/Droid wars would have led people to believe.

Well, not quite. Industry experts probably envisioned a price war ensuing between the two ultra-competitive wireless service providers.

Verizon lowered the price of its unlimited family talk and text plan to $149.99 (from $229.99!!), which is a huge savings. I’m sure current Verizon subscribers were happy to see this change occur.

The company also lowered its unlimited nationwide voice plan by $30 (from $99.99 to $69.99).

AT&T plans to make serious price cuts as well. Things are definitely heating up in the postpaid as well as the prepaid universe. This puts even more pressure on companies like Straight Talk Wireless and Boost Mobile, which have both been cutting out nice niches as affordable (prepaid) wireless companies.

Verizon Chief Financial Officer John Killian called this move “offensive,” in that it’s about “market opportunity.”

Microsoft Unveils Windows 7 Slate Device

The Windows 7 Slate is a thin tablet device “more powerful than a phone and almost as powerful as a PC.” They are for surfing the web, reading, and entertainment. We’ll see how this product fares, but I think there are a lot of people waiting for the other tablet device, which should come out sometime this year.

Sprint Overdrive 3G/4G Router to Be Released

According to engadget, Sprint has officially announced the Sprint Overdrive 3G/4G mobile hotspot.

The box connects to the Sprint WiMax network and shares the connection with 5 other devices via WiFi.

The cost of the Overdrive router is $99 after a $50 rebate and a two year $60 per month agreement. This badboy will be on sale January 10.

The best thing about this hotspot-to-go? It’s smaller than your hand.

10 Scary High-Tech Weapons That Really Exist

An article at Wired’s Danger Room has a list of 10 Sci-Fi Weapons that Actually Exist. They look like weapons from a science fiction movie that hasn’t been made yet and are really really scary.

XM-25 Grenade Launcher is one of them. This weapon will be able to propel grenades accurately 2,300 feet away, which will detonate as they pass their targets. Yikes.

Barnes & Noble e-Reader First Pictures

Barnes & Noble will soon be releasing an e-reader to compete with the likes of Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s e-reader device. The new device contains some features similar to the iPhone and the Kindle, and has the welcome addition of a light to help ease the wear and tear on the eyes while reading in the dark.

The new device, which has a tentative name at the moment that might change before it’s released, will have a multi-touch screen that utilizes e-ink like the Kindle. Owners of Barnes & Noble’s e-reader will have access to all books, but also to the books published by B&N, which will probably be lower-priced. In addition, users will be able to access scanned books on Google, which are mostly out of print books.

The handheld reader’s relatively low price may be offset by books sales. Here are a few pictures released by Gizmodo.
