The Strokes Live at Austin City Limits 2010

Julian Casablancas and the rest of New York garage rock legends The Strokes graced the main stage of the Austin City Limits festival of 2010 with their presence and held forth over a rapt audience or young and middle age alike.

After all these years (The Strokes epic first album Is This It was released in 2001), these songs are just as fun, singable, interesting, and cool as they were a decade ago. The Strokes, whose last album was released four years ago (it was their third album) are due for a new album which should be released sometime early 2011.

Until then, you can keep cycling through Is This It and Room on Fire (a CD which has been in constant rotation in my car for four years).

While these videos of The Strokes performance at ACL 2010 are pretty poor quality, you can still hear the songs (and the crowd enjoying them) really well. The videos here include the songs Someday, Is This It, Last Nite, Take it or Leave It, Reptilia, Under Control, and Trying Your Luck.

Find New Music at The Hype Machine

The Hype Machine is an interesting website that may be best described as a music blog aggregator site.

The site follows music “discussions” from legitimate online music blogs and collects blog posts and mp3s from thousands of different musical acts and artists.

One of the coolest pages on the site is one that ranks the most popular songs on the site (the ones that get clicked the most by visitors). You can find some cool music here that you would never hear on the radio as well as find songs by bands you’ve probably heard before.

I like the Hype Machine because of its user-friendly, un-intimidating website. It looks like a simple wordpress blog, which is very inviting and makes the experience there seem easy-going. It also has a kind of cool digg thing going on that promotes good music and also the blogs where the good stuff was found.

Many free music sites seem kind of involved, confusing, or too widgety. HM, however, seems to have been created by people who like music and wanted to create exactly the type of site they would be interested in using: a one stop shop to find new tunes and music news with an eye to the blogosphere.

If you’re a music fan, check this site out and give it a try.
