Do You Really Want a Smartphone? I Don’t.

There is a huge amount of hype about cell phones that I really have never been able to get into.  I’m just not interested in hot new phones that can “keep me connected” in more ways than just via voice and text.

Sure, a Twitter app and a good Google search app would be nice to have (not to mention a maps function) but I really am starting to appreciate not being completely connected at all times.

If I had a smartphone giving me access to email (not to mention my Adsense earnings or Google analytics) while I was, say, hanging out in a bookstore having coffee, then I would feel like I was in front of my computer at my desk working.

I love the fact that there are still times in my life when I can be away from the constant “chatter” of Twitter and the constant intrusion of email and banner ads.

To me, this time is sacred–the time away from the computer, the relatively unconnected times of my day.  It’s nice to just be inside your head for a while, free from interrruption.

For this reason, I will stick with my cheap Motorola cell phone that pretty much just makes calls, sends texts, and snaps pictures (although not very well).  I like my phone for what it lacks and I don’t see myself purchasing an iPhone or an Android phone any time soon.
