Rumors have been swirling around on the internet–at least in semi-nerdy cell phone circles–as to whether or not Straight Talk Wireless would be adding a touch screen smartphone to its phone options for use with its prepaid plans.

*Update: 9/27/2010: This phone has been discontinued by Straight Talk because it is frankly an older model of phone. It has been replaced by the Samsung r355c phone (see picture below), which is newer, more modern, and has a lot of functionality that will allow you to do everything you want to do with your phone. See more about this phone at StraightTalk.com.
It’s been revealed that the Samsung Finesse r810 is available for use with Straight Talk service–which is a great thing for those who like high end phones but want one of the best plans in the prepaid market. There are many out there who are deterred from going prepaid due to poor phone selection. At $299, Samsung Finesse R810 is not cheap, but it may appeal to the segment of phone users who don’t hesitate at dropping cash for a solid, fun, smartphone with a functional touch screen.
The Finesse R810 is similar to the iPhone in that it has a large color touch screen, but beyond that, there really is not much similarity. The phone uses EVDO technology for transferring data, so it is much faster than many of the other available Straight Talk cell phones.
Check Straight Talk’s website, www.straighttalk.com for availability and special offers on this phone in your area. When you get to the site, in order to find more information about this phone, either use the search box at the upper right and type in “Samsung Finesse” or select the “Shop” button in the navigation bar at the top of the site and select “Phones.”
Then all you have to do is put in the zip code where the phone will be used to check for availability. It’s easy.

I got a Samung Finesse for Christmas with unlimited talk, texts and data for $45 per month on Straight Talk and I love it. I think it’s just as nice as the iPhone at a third of the price; when you consider that the iPhone is $150 per month you would pay $3600 over two years including service and phone and with Straight Talk I pay $1379 over two years including service and phone then it’s really not that expensive. And Straight Talk is on Verizon’s network nationwide which we all know is far better than AT&T, at least I don’t have to worry about dropped calls and no 3G.
I just received one of these as a gift and it is a very good phone! While it is not a direct competitior for the iPhone types out there, it is certainly a pleasure to use. Of course, it’s like you said – the Straight Talk plans makes this a very good deal. The $45 unlimited plan is really the best deal out there right now and it’s great to have a smarter phone to use. I really think ST is onto something with these more high end phones. A lot of people, myself included, like the monthly savings but still want a smartphone.

How do I go about finding a Straight Talk Samsung Finesse in the Savannah, GA. area? I have searched local walmarts and nothing
I really need a new phone ASAP and most the other phones just plain suck. Thanks
Tabatha – I don’t think the Samsung Finesse is available currently in any market. I have heard of some people buying the Finesse on ebay and using it with Straight Talk, but I definitely can’t recommend that. It would have to be a straight talk model and sim card. I think you’re better off waiting for the new smartphone, if and when it ever gets released.
